TMCC class targets exports to India

More training of solar technicians planned by TMCC
Russ Cartwright, the operations manager for Independent Power Corp. in Reno, has been training solar technicians by himself for the better part of three decades. Small wonder, then, that Cartwright was among those applauding most loudly as Truckee Meadows Community College last week took another step toward creation of a program to train and certify solar technicians. Television crews focused their attention on the installation of solar panels on the school’s IGT Applied Technology Center on Edison Way — panels that will provide training to students and information about solar to the public.

Employers deal on track
Employers Insurance Group, the Reno-based workers compensation carrier, last week cleared a regulatory hurdle that had stalled its proposed acquisition of a Florida insurer. And the Reno company apparently got a concession of more than $3 million to smooth any ruffled feathers over the delay. When Employers in January originally announced its plans to acquire AmCOMP of North Palm Beach, Fla., it said it would pay $12.25 for each AmCOMP share. That priced the deal at about $194 million. But last week, Employers said it’s now planning to pay only $12.15 a share — a total of about $182.25 million for AmCOMP’s 15 million outstanding shares.

NCET, DRI win recognition — and funds
The US Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration last week recognized Nevada’s Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology and the Desert Research Institute for excellence in economic development grant performance. NCET will receive an additional $20,000 grant from the EDA while DRI will receive an additional $5,700. The original EDA grants in 2006 were facilitated by Sen. Harry Reid when NCET received $200,000 and DRI received $57,000. NCET was recognized for its work on programs designed to encourage Nevadans to start new businesses, and to then connect them to the resources they need to succeed.
