Hearing today on college betting ban

The U.S. House Judiciary Committee holds a hearing today on legislation to end college sports betting in Nevada casinos.

Rep. Jim Gibbons, R-Nev., said he will testify against the "misguided legislation" and urge, instead, that Congress find a way to deal with illegal sports betting.

"This congressional hearing is a great opportunity for common sense to publicly expose this misguided legislation for what it really is - a sham," he said.

He said the legislation targets one legal and well regulated industry in just one state.

"It is imperative that we help educate these members of Congress on the real problem in this country - illegal gambling on our college campuses," he said.

Gibbons said the Justice Department should instead set up a panel to investigate illegal collegiate sports betting.

The bill would ban betting in Nevada on college sports and other amateur athletics.
