WASHINGTON - Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., is adding a provision to the Defense Department funding bill that would let retired veterans collect disability compensation without waiving part of their retirement benefits.
The plan would cost $1.9 billion a year.
He said current law prohibits retirees injured in the line of duty from collecting full disability and military retirement benefits at the same time.
Reid said the amendment would benefit 400,000 retirees.
"Asking disabled military retirees to waive a portion of their benefits is no way to honor the sacrifice and courage of these Americans," said Reid.
