Day of Unity promotes end to domestic violence

Soroptimist International of Carson Valley in conjunction with the Family Support Council, celebrates October as Domestic Violence Month. The public is invited to the fourth annual Day of Unity to be celebrated Monday.

A candlelight march and vigil will be held to promote an end to domestic violence in Douglas County through awareness, advocacy and action.

The mark will begin at the Lampe Park Pavilion at 7 p.m., where candles will be provided, and end at the Family Support Council parking lot on Waterloo Lane. The procession will be led by the Douglas County Sheriff's Cadets followed by state and local dignitaries.

Soroptimist International of Carson Valley President Debra Lang will welcome participants to the commemorative gathering and the keynote speaker will be Frankie Sue Del Papa, Attorney General for the State of Nevada, who has dedicated her office to advocating an end to domestic violence through her elected position.

Additionally, Sheriff Ron Pierini and officer Jenny Hill will speak about efforts in Douglas County to provide support. A survivor of domestic abuse will provide insight into the cycle and how she broke away to begin a new life.

Booklets will focus on "Every Home A Safe Home" and buttons as reminders to educate and avoid domestic abuse will be handed out free. Refreshments will be served following the presentations and T-shirts commemorating the march and vigil will be sold at cost for $10 each.

The community is invited to join the walk, show support for victims and promote education to end abusive behavior. For information contact Karen Edwards of the Douglas County Family Support Council at 782-8692 or Elaine Agnason of Sharkey's Nugget at 782-7282.
