City OKs street abandonment

Improvements to both the Ormsby House and Carson Station will close portions of some West Carson streets.

Carson City supervisors approved Thursday the abandonment of West Seventh Street for the Ormsby House expansion. Portions of West Eighth Street and Curry Street will be abandoned to make way for the Carson Station's new parking garage.

Eventually improvements at the Carson Station will include a new building, Chief Executive Officer Steve Bilyeu said.

Seventh Street will become part of the Ormsby House's parking lot and valet parking.

Also, $100,000 of redevelopment money will be returned to the Ormsby House to help pay the street abandonment.

Supervisors lauded the property owners of both casinos for their investment in Carson City.

The abandonments were conditional on a Nevada Supreme Court ruling expected any time.

The city is appealing a district court ruling that the city cannot charge for street abandonments.

In question is whether the city or property owners own the right-of-way. The answer is connected to the historical review of how the streets were acquired by the city.
