Heightened Security

April Conway, public affairs officer for the Nevada Army and Air National Guard said the guard is on heightened security today in the wake of the terrorist attacks on the Pentagon and World Trade Center.

Conway said the front gates of all armories and air bases across Nevada are locked, and measures are being taken to assure that only the people who have official business are there and have valid identification.

"We have not heard anything from the Governor and until we do it's business as usual," Conway said.

Lt. Col. Woods from the Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center in Bridgeport, Calif., said he received orders at about 8:30 a.m. from command at Camp Pendleton to implement Threat Con Delta, which is a heightened state of security.

Woods would not elaborate on what measures need to be taken to do this.

Woods added that he was receiving updated information on the attack from Fox News just like the general public.

Identification checks for the bases military housing in Coleville, Calif., are also expected to occur.

Anne McMillin, public affairs officer for Fallon Naval Air Station said the base implemented Threat Con Charlie, which is also a heightened state of security including 100 percent identification checks.

The reserve security force has been activated and no military aircraft has taken off as of 10 a.m.

McMillin said since the Federal Aviation Administration has grounded all flights she is not sure if a plane still in the air would be allowed to land at the station or be directed to the Reno Tahoe Airport.

"All bets are off today on what normally happens," McMillin said. "We are deeply concerned and horrified about the events of today."

McMillin added that the servicemen stationed in Fallon have friends who work at the Pentagon and their thoughts are all with them.
