Railroad talk, meetings canceled in wake of attack

The Nevada State Railroad Museum is postponing a speech planned for this evening.

John Gruber, of Madison, Wis., was to speak on railroads and photography. Because of the Federal Aviation Administration's ban on commercial flights Tuesday, Gruber will not be able to attend the event.

"We will have a program of some kind, but it won't be his," said museum program coordinator John Frink.

The even is being hosted in conjunction with an exhibit at the museum. The event will be rescheduled for October. Call the museum at 775-687-6593 for information.

-- Meetings for Carson City's Debt Management and Historic Architecture Review commissions were canceled Tuesday. The Carson City Regional Transportation Commission meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. tonight in the Community Center's Sierra Room, 851 E. William St.

-- Participants in the Reno Air Races were grounded Tuesday but continued preparations at the Stead International Airport for the start of the races Thursday.

The Federal Aviation Administration prohibited flights Tuesday but organizers expect the ban to be lifted by the time the races begin.

"The plan right now is to proceed," said airport manager Skip Polak. "As soon as the FAA lifts its waiver, they'll be flying again."

However, Polak said precautions will be taken.

"They will not sacrifice safety in order to do this," he said.
