Homecoming to be a casual affair

This year's Homecoming queen may be crowned wearing jeans.

In an effort to attract more students to the celebration after the game Saturday night, Carson High School's Homecoming dance will be a casual affair.

"We've been having a poor turnout for dances. Less than 10 percent of the the student body shows," said student body president and Homecoming king candidate Brian Rebholtz. "We're attempting to reach out to all the groups at Carson High School, not just one or two of them."

Principal Glen Adair approached the leadership class with the idea to dress down for the dance and the class agreed, voting to keep it casual.

But queen candidate Haley Zook will miss the old tradition.

"Homecoming was always the first big dance of the year," she said. "People liked going out to dinner and dressing up."

However, she is glad that it will be free this year.

The 12 queen and king candidates were selected by fellow seniors, and the winners will be announced during halftime of Friday's football game against Reno High School.

"I was honored to even be nominated," said candidate Brooke Hilke. "I never thought it would happen."

The rest of the students are in celebration mode as well. Monday kicked off a week of theme days with socks-on-hands day.

Tuesday, students dressed as cheesy tourists, today students are wearing their class colors. Thursday is invent-your-own super hero day and Friday students should dress in blue and white to show their Senator pride.
