Money sought for safe grad celebration

With about two months left until the end of the school year, the Safe Grad Committee is less than half way to its goal of raising $28,000 for the sober graduation celebration.

"It's coming in pretty good but we still have a ways to go," said Karen Hohl, co-chairwoman of the committee. "It's a fabulous party, but it's a very costly party. We appreciate the support we've had in the past and hope people will give generously again this year."

The all-night, alcohol-free parties began in 1987, after two students died a few years earlier in an alcohol-related accident on their way home from a graduation party at Washoe Lake.

"Statistically, students are in greater danger on graduation night," Hohl said. "We've always focused on the safety aspect. I think it's a very beneficial cause to the high school."

She added that not one Carson High graduate has died on graduation night since the program started.

The celebration will be held at the Carson City Community Center in the evening after the commencement ceremony.

A variety of activities will be available and the swimming pool will be open for the graduates.

The highlight of the party happens at 4 a.m. when the graduates board buses for a trip to Great America.

Between 300 and 400 students are expected to attend. An optional fee of $30 per person can be paid.
