Hikers find human skull at Lake Tahoe

Hikers found a human skull on Friday evening in a forested area near Shakespeare Rock at Lake Tahoe, according to Douglas County Sheriff Sgt. Lance Modispacher.

The hikers brought the skull to the Tahoe Douglas Fire Station in Glenbrook where they called sheriff's deputies.

Investigators responding to the scene found more skeletal remains and clothing which led them to believe the remains are those of a female.

"The condition of the skeletal remains suggest that they have been there since last summer," said Modispacher.

The remains were collected by investigators and taken to the Washoe County Coroner's Office in Reno. An autopsy is expected to be complete by Monday, Modispacher said.

Officers responding to the scene completed their investigation by daybreak Saturday.

"It appears that persons may have placed the body in the forested area in an attempt to conceal it," said Modispacher.

There was no identification or weapon found near the remains.

An investigation into the case is ongoing.
