Census data paints portait of market

Washoe County leads the other major

population centers in Nevada in most measures

of personal economic well-being.

Much-awaited economic data for Nevada

was released by the U.S. Census Bureau last

week, and the county-by-county breakdown

of its information collected in the 2000

census shows:

income in Washoe County in 1999

was $45,815. The figure for Carson City

was $41,809. In Clark County (Las

Vegas), the median household income was

$44,616.

* Family income: (This statistic includes

more two-worker families than the household

income figure.) The median family

income in Washoe County was $54,283 in

1999. The figure for Carson City was

$49,570 and the figure for Clark County

was $50,485.

* Per-capita income: When the total

incomes earned in Washoe County are

divided by the total population, the county's

per-capita income in 1999 was

$21,785 and Carson City's was $20,943.

* Management and professional occupations:

workforce held jobs in managerial or professional

positions. For Washoe County,

the figure was 29.5 percent. In Clark

County, the figure was 24.4 percent.

led the three cities as 26.9 percent of its

workforce holds service jobs. The figures

for Washoe (19.9 percent) and Carson

City (18.2 percent) are much lower.

* Sales and office occupations: The three

cities are almost identical with roughly 28

percent of the workforce holding these

jobs.

* Housing prices: Washoe County, where

the median value of a home was $161,600

at the time of the 2000 Census, is well

above the other cities. In Carson City, the

median home value was $147,500; in

Clark County, the figure was $139,500.

* Rents: The median rent of a housing unit

in Clark county was $716. In Washoe

County, the median rent was $675. The

figure in Carson City was $650.

National comparisons aren't possible

because the Census Bureau hasn't completed

its state-by-state compilations.
