Holiday prompts closures, changes in office hours

With Christmas and New Year's in the middle of the work week this year, few businesses and government entities are closing their doors for more than a day.

-- The Nevada State Library and Archives and the Carson City Library will be open every day but Wednesday, Christmas Day. The Carson City Library is closing a little early, at 6 p.m., on Christmas Eve. The Nevada State Library and Archives will maintain normal hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on that day.

-- City Hall and the chamber of commerce are maintaining normal hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., every day except Wednesday.

-- The Carson City Marriage Bureau will be closed Christmas Day, but open New Year's Day, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The bureau will be open New Year's Eve until 6 p.m., and a judge will be available for marriages from 5 to 6 p.m.

-- The Nevada Appeal's office will be closed at noon Tuesday through Christmas Day. The newspaper will publish every day, and newsroom (881-1215) and subscriber services (882-2515) employees will work.

-- Banks will start closing a little early, many around noon on Christmas Eve. By federal mandate, banks close on Christmas and New Year's Day, but other than that, they will conduct business as usual.

-- The Carson City Senior Center will be closed Wednesday and Thursday. Senior centers in Dayton, Douglas County, Silver Springs and Virginia City will be closed Christmas Day only.

-- Carson Aquatic Facility will be open with lap swims, open swims and the weight rooms every day, except Christmas and New Year's Day. Sweat Shop, which is held in the Community Center, will be restricted to 9 a.m. classes, except for Dec. 30 and Jan. 2. Call Carson City Recreation at 887-2290.

-- The Boys & Girls Club of Northern Nevada will be open for the two-week winter break, from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily with the exception of Christmas and New Year's Day. Children should bring a sack lunch, officials said.

-- Offices at Western Nevada Community College will be open normal hours, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through the semester break. Classes are over for the year. College offices will be closed Christmas and New Year's Day. Spring semester starts Jan. 21.

-- Instruction ended at the University of Nevada, Reno, Dec. 18, and residence halls closed Dec. 19. In an effort to curb costs and reduce energy consumption during winter break, certain campus buildings at UNR will be closed or partially closed through Jan. 5.
