Well-behaved New Year's crowd

As more of the crowd trickled out of town in the rain Wednesday, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office upgraded its crowd estimates for New Year's Eve to more than 65,000.

One hundred and thirty-six arrests were reported by the Sheriff's Office, the California Department of Alcohol Beverage Control and the South Lake Tahoe Police Department.

According to a report issued Wednesday, Douglas County deputies arrested 44 adults and six juveniles this year -- about the same number as last year and half the number as the year prior.

Most of this year's arrests were due to disorderly conduct from intoxication, with a few people placed in civil protective custody because they couldn't care for themselves, the county reported.

Still, Sgt. Lance Modispacher said Sheriff Ron Pierini was pleased with "how well the celebrants were behaved" when considering their sheer numbers.

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department reported arresting 19 people overnight. Beverage Control cited 67 people on 87 charges, only four being unrelated to alcohol.

About 250 law enforcement personnel from both sides of the border were dispatched to the event at the casino corridor. One hundred of the officers worked the street scene in teams of five.

Other agencies working the event included the Nevada Highway Patrol, the Nevada Department of Prisons, the California Highway Patrol, El Dorado County Probation Department and Placerville Police Department.

The majority of charges include minors in possession of alcohol, drinking in public, selling alcohol to a minor and underage drinkers purchasing alcohol.

ABC focused on reiterating the law against carrying open containers. Most drinkers were ordered to pour out their liquor but were not ticketed.

"The last thing we wanted to do is give out a lot of tickets and instigate a riot," ABC district spokesman Tim Gorsuch said Wednesday.
