Obituary: Ralph Edward Shaffer

A memorial service for Ralph Edward Shaffer, 62, a Fernley resident and Northern Nevada resident for the past 20 years, will be at 10 a.m. Friday at FitzHenry's Chapel of Faith.

Mr. Shaffer died Jan. 14, 2002, in Reno. He was born Oct. 14, 1939, in Laramie, Wyo., to Charles and Vera Strauss Shaffer.

Before moving to this area, he lived in Alaska.

Mr. Shaffer served in the Carson City Sheriff's Department from July 1, 1985, to Jan. 26, 1996. He achieved the title of sergeant detective. He was an Alaska State trooper from 1972-1978 and he worked for the Alaska Fish and Game from 1967-1972. He instituted the DARE program in Carson City and he was active in the Junior Cadets program for the Carson City Sheriff's Department. He enjoyed woodworking.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1957-1960.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1968.

Among his survivors are his mother Vera Meadows of Merced, Calif.; daughter Josephine Dawson of Juneau, Alaska; brothers Richard of Ketchikan, Alaska, and Zane of Wyoming; sister Marie Lovell of Oregon; three grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Cremation will be at FitzHenry's Crematory.

FitzHenry's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
