A judge said Monday there should be no more delays before a July 22 trial begins for four of 10 defendants accused in the 1998 beating death of a Carson City man.
Two of the 10 people scheduled to go to trial in the murder of Sammy Resendiz were in District Judge Michael Griffin's courtroom Monday discussing final issues before the long-awaited trial begins.
"The trial will not be delayed," Griffin said. "Nobody should say they want a continuance because they aren't prepared. You've had years to prepare."
With the trial start confirmed, Jury Commissioner Colleen Glover said about 150 names of potential jurors were being pulled for the estimated three-week trial.
District Attorney Noel Waters told the judge he needs at least a week and a half to present the state's case.
The 10 defendants are awaiting trial on charges they beat to death Sammy Resendiz, 25, at the Round House Inn on Aug. 23, 1998.
Resendiz suffered several broken bones and head trauma and died at a hospital a few hours later.
Clint Malone, Rocky Boice Jr., Frederick Fred and Lew Dutchy will be tried July 22.
Julian Contreras, Jessica Evans, Jaron Malone, Elvin Fred, Sylvia Fred and Michael Kizer are awaiting trial dates.
Two other suspects were arrested in connection with the beating death. Alejandro Avila and David Moyle were given probationary sentences after pleading guilty to lesser charges. The trial was delayed while appeals were made to the Nevada Supreme Court over the murder charges.
