Nominees sought for community awards

Nominees are being sought for the third annual Community Awards sponsored by the Nevada Appeal and Carson Access Television to recognize outstanding achievements during the past year.

Awards will be presented in eight categories:

-- Student of the Year

-- Educator of the Year

-- Artist of the Year

-- Sportsman of the Year

-- Boss of the Year

-- Employee of the Year

-- Humanitarian of the Year

-- Organization of the Year

Nominations must be postmarked or e-mailed no later than April 12. They must include a written description of the activities, talents, achievements or contributions that would justify the award. The more detailed, the better.

The address for nominations is Nevada Appeal, PO Box 2288, Carson City, Nev., 89702. They may also be e-mailed to appeal@tahoe.com. People sending nominations should include their own name and telephone number, so they may be contacted for additional information.

Advertisements with forms for nominations will appear in upcoming Sunday and Wednesday editions of the Appeal.

Residents anywhere in the Nevada Appeal's circulation area are eligible for the awards.

Members of the Nevada Appeal's reader panel and CAT-10 board will narrow the list of nominees to three finalists in each category. The award winners will be announced at a luncheon May 17.

It is the third year for Community Awards sponsored by the Appeal and CAT-10, although they stem from a 30-year tradition of the Carson City Area Chamber of Commerce.

Last year's winners were Teacher: Casey Gilles; Student: Crystal Loewe; Artist: Carol Foldvary-Anderson;

Boss: Renee Mayo; Employee: Mary Ann Weiss; Humanitarian: George Horton; Organization: Eagle Valley Children's Home Respite Care; Athlete: Doug Brooks

Slight changes have been made in two categories -- Educator of the Year and Sportsman of the Year, to somewhat broaden the choices.
