Outstanding fishing in the Bishop, Calif. area

BISHOP, CALIF. AREA: Gary Olson of the Bishop Creek Resorts (760-873-4484) sent in this report: If you weren't here you missed a great weekend.

South Lake: The lake is continuing to rise. It is coming up about a foot a day. Shore fishing remains very good with nightcrawlers or salmon eggs. We have heard of some success with Thomas Buoyant lures. Most anglers were coming out with limits and were reporting releasing a lot of other fish.

North Lake: The road is finally open. Reports over the weekend of fantastic fishing with nightcrawlers or salmon eggs. No great size but "gobs" of fish.

Intake No. 2: Fishing was great with Trout Traps or Power Bait. Most anglers reported great fishing.

Sabrina Lake: Still pretty low. Two anglers reported "Obscene" fishing on the backside of the lake. They threw nightcrawlers, salmon eggs and anything else they had in their creels and reported almost a fish with every cast.

Bishop Creek: The creek is running at a very fishable speed. Fishing was excellent with nightcrawlers and Power Bait. Many anglers were complaining that they were catching their limits too quickly and had to stop fishing. We advised them to begin releasing and then they could fish all day. Still a lot of action with Panther Martin lures. Fly fishermen reported very good success in Weir Pond with Ants or light Cahills.

BLUE LAKES, CALIF. AREA: Dave Kirby of the Woodfords Station

(530-694-2930) reported the road is still about two weeks away from being open. It needs to dry out from the wetness of the winter snow conditions.

CAPLES LAKE, CALIF: Dave Kirby reported a good weekend with lots of limits of rainbows. An 11-pound, 10-ounce Mackinaw trout was caught while trolling a broken back Rapala lure.

CARSON RIVERS, CALIF: Dave Kirby reported that both Calif. F&G and Alpine County planted and a lot of nice fish were caught.

West Carson: Water is up a bit and not too murky. There were 5 rainbows, over 5 pounds and many others, about 3 pounds. Anglers were working nightcrawlers or small lures along the bottom.

East Carson: Water is up a bit and not too murky.

The largest trout since the opener: a 7-pound Alpers rainbow from the Jetty with a red/gold Thomas Buoyant lure. Other big rainbows were a 5.57 on white Power Bait on the South Shore. A 5.30, a 5.27 and a 5.17 on Power Bait from the Jetty. A 5.04 on a Trout Teaser at the Outlet.

LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - North Shore:

Mickey Daniels of Mickey's Big Mack Charters (800-877-1462): "My fishermen are catching limits of Mackinaw trout (average size) with an occasional rainbow. I've been tagging and releasing most of the smaller ones. Five anglers caught 12 Macks on Saturday and two of them were tagged fish that I had previously caught. We've been trolling 250-550 feet deep in the area in front of Carnelian Bay and King's Beach. We are using Herring Dodger flasher blades with either live minnows or pearl Apex lures."

Gene St. Denis of Tahoe Trophy Trout at South Lake Tahoe, Calif. (530-544-6552): "The Macks are stacked anywhere from 130 to 260 feet deep. I've been working off of Cal-Neva Point and Dollar Point. Our best action has been with silver-colored, Herring Dodger flasher blades with live minnows. We have been getting 3-6 fish per trip with the largest last week being 8 pounds."

LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - South Shore: Gene St. Denis said: "Mack fishing has slowed down. We've been trolling 150-250 feet deep in front of Camp Richardson with silver Herring Dodger flasher blades and live minnows. Jigging has also been good with white Herring jigs tipped with a minnow. Our biggest last week was 7 pounds."

LAKE TAHOE, NEV. -- East Shore:

Gene St. Denis said: "Toplining has picked up for rainbows and browns, but do it very early in the morning at Deadman's Point or Logan Shoals with small, floating Rapala lures. Mackinaw fishing has slowed down. Our largest was 6 pounds. We been trolling 160-270 feet deep with silver-colored, Herring Dodger flasher blades and live minnows.

TOPAZ LAKE, CALIF. AND NEV.) Chuck Fields of the Topaz Lake Marina (775-266-3550) reported: A weekend of nice weather and great fishing. A 4 3/4 pound rainbow on Power Bait. The fish were running up to 2.5 pounds per fish. We had one stringer turned in of 5 rainbows that weighed a total of 12 pounds. The shore fishing along the highway was great with Power Bait or nightcrawlers and the boaters were anchoring right in front of the shore fishermen.

TWIN LAKES, CALIF. AREA:

LOWER TWIN LAKE: Steve Marti of the Twin Lake Resort (760-932-7751) sent in this report: Good fishing is continuing. The top fish were a 7 3/4 pound rainbow on a green Woolly Bugger fly, a 5-pound, 2-ounce rainbow on a Super Duper lure and a 4-pound, 3-ounce German brown on a Panther Martin lure. Several 5-7 pound Alpers Trophy Rainbow trout and the weekly 1,000 pounds of Calif. F&G rainbows were planted.

UPPER TWIN LAKE: Dick Christianson of Mono Village (760-932-7071) sent in this report: The weather has improved and so has the fishing. Calif. F&G and Alpers plantings have made shore fishing good using Power Bait, nightcrawlers or Hot Shot, Super Duper and Thomas Buoyant lures. Trolling is picking up, using the same lures, but gold and red colors have been working the best. Float tubers are doing really good with Black Ants or green flies with red markings. The top rainbows of the week were: One angler caught a 5-pound, 5-ounce, a 3-pound, 13-ounce and a 3-pound, all on Power Bait. Other top rainbows were a 4-pound, 14-ounce on Sierra Gold, a 4-pound, 11-ounce with a Blue Fox Minnow Spinner and a 4-pound, 10-ounce with Sierra Gold.

ROBINSON CREEK: Has been very good with salmon eggs and small lures with red markings.
