Demonstrators in Los Angeles protest impending war with Iraq

LOS ANGELES -- Hundreds of protesters lit candles at twilight and marched down Wilshire Boulevard on Sunday to protest an impending war against Iraq.

"We think the best way to protect Americans is to build peace in the Middle East," said Jonathan Parfrey, director of Physicians for Social Responsibility, a group that won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1985. "We think a unilateral invasion of Iraq will do the exact opposite of what we're trying to do."

Some protesters said they are against the Bush administration's policies in the Middle East.

"I am definitely against this war machine," protester Elle Perrault told KABC-TV. "We did Desert Storm One, now this is Desert Storm Two. Enough with the fear tactics."

Several protesters carried black-and-white signs that read: "Don't invade Iraq."

Others said they were marching on the eve of Veterans Day because they don't want another war to produce yet another group of veterans.
