Girl Scout troop collects mittens for local children

A junior Girl Scout troop is helping a few little hands to be warmer this winter.

The Mitten Tree has returned to the Carson City Library, and is already hung with more than 13 sets of new mittens and hats for needy children.

"It's a popular feature during the holidays," said Andrea Moore, library spokeswoman.

New winter accessories, such as new hats, scarves, gloves and mittens, are needed to fill the boughs of the tree in the library's youth department.

Junior Girl Scout Troop 464, a group of fourth- through sixth-graders, will collect the clothing until Dec. 20. The troop plans to ask a local charity to distribute the items to the children.

"I think it's a fun way for the girls to help the community," said troop leader Cathleen Mital. "We like to do service projects that help people."

The Carson City Library will be open Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday this week. Normal hours are from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Monday.

The library is at the corner of Roop and Washington streets. Call 887-2244 for more information.
