120 YEARS AGO

Last evening, as Mr. C.C. Powning, late Congressional candidate, was about to step on the Reno train, Sheriff Swift arrested him on a warrant sworn out by Warden Garrard of the penitentiary. It appears Powning had visited the penitentiary to see an old friend, who was in for life, and managed to secrete some of the footprints of the mastodon and prehistoric man. He also had a drawing of the Capitol which he had made; no doubt he intends to move the capital to Reno.

100 YEARS AGO

A number of sports are oiling up their flintlocks for the turkey shoot in Empire. Wiggins is disappointed that the birds are so big the boys will hit every bird.

70 YEARS AGO

Carson schools prepare for Thanksgiving. A Thanksgiving proclamation by Gov. Balzar was read. Giving the origin of Thanksgiving was Arthur Warnken, among many speakers.

50 YEARS AGO

Battery A of the 421st anti-aircraft artillery automatic weapons battalion of the Nevada National Guard will be activated in formal ceremonies. The backbone of the new outfit will be the 47th Army Band, which had its headquarters in Carson City for several years. Capt. Chester R. Wood is commanding officer of Battery A.

20 YEARS AGO

Tom Owen, director of the Carson Bureau of Land Management district, said he was glad to see the arrest of two men who allegedly went over the fence of BLM at Beverly Street to steal firewood, but he cites many thefts requiring beefing up of security.

10 YEARS AGO

Nevada Magazine, the official state travel promotion magazine, is to publish the Nevada Vacation Planner in April.
