Nevada gets a chance to remember

The Rev. John Jackson said funerals are often the place where people most realize the true value of life.

Sept. 11 had a similar effect he hopes Americans never forget, said Jackson, senior pastor at Carson Valley Christian Center.

That's why he agreed to speak Sunday at Mills Park during the Nevada Remembers memorial. The event from 3 to 8 p.m. will help commemorate last year's terrorist attacks.

"I think it's important for us to realize that in the midst of tragedy we recognize our true values," he said. "It's a time for us to recognize and remember what we were all like on Sept. 11 and 12. Those are the values that last beyond the cultural fads."

Premiere Production Group, LLC, created by local community members Tim Hartman, Vincent Vernanza, Gyla Keefer and Wendy Hoag, organized the Nevada Remembers event.

Hartman, Vernanza, Keefer and Hoag volunteered their time to organize the tribute and memorial with state and city leaders. The memorial will include inspirational and patriotic performances by local band, Simple Truth.

It will feature appearances by military, police and fire officials.

"I think it's important to remember an event like this not so much for the tragedy's sake but for the sake of the heroes," Jackson said. "It's important to pay tribute to them."

The memorial will be followed by an anniversary tribute Wednesday hosted by Gov. Kenny Guinn at the Capitol.

The Sept. 11 tribute will include a military aircraft fly-over, a 21-gun salute and a presentation by the color guard.
