Farmer's market

A chill was in the air, the tomatoes were ripe and Telegraph Square was abuzz during the first Fall Farmer's Market on Saturday.

The markets will run every Saturday through Oct. 5 and many of the old favorites, vendors from the market at Mills Park's Pony Express Pavilion, came for the event. The Pavilion's market closed last week.

Lattin Farms of Fallon had tomatoes, squash and some of those famous Fallon cantaloupes and Sue's Garden, the only Carson City grower, had a wide array of vegetables, herbs, squash and kale.

She grows her produce on about three-quarters of an acre in South Carson City, just east of the old Wal-Mart.

"We start our plants in February and everything is grown from seed. I use my own seed for better control and garden using organic methods, but I'm not certified organic. I don't want to do the paperwork."

She and her husband, Marv, are retired and travel to a number of local markets. Some of their produce comes from the Johnson Lane area, where partners Pat and Ken McCray have another 3/4-acre under cultivation.

"We grow, pick, pack and market everything," Sue said. "We really enjoy this. It keeps us active."

Yuba City vendor Roger Bergeleen said he was impressed by Saturday's turnout.

"Because this is the first farmer's market at this location, I thought it would be slow," he said. "But this is going well."

"We are thrilled to death," said Doreen Mack, spokeswoman for the Telegraph Square Group. "We've had a great turnout and this is only the first time. I'm getting a lot of positive comments. People love it downtown."

On Sept. 14 the Fine Art and Jazz Festival is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the market runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Telegraph Square.
