Obituary: Barbara A. Bybee

Memorial services for longtime Carson City resident Barbara A. Bybee will be at 2 p.m. today at FitzHenry's Chapel of Faith in Carson City.

Ms. Bybee was born Nov. 19, 1928 in Cheyenne, Wyo., and adopted by Alice and Frank Bybee as an infant.

She died Sept. 5, 2002 after a battle with cancer for several months.

Ms. Bybee began her 25-year career with the Nevada Department of Transportation in Carson City as a temporary employee in 1963. At the time of her retirement in 1989, she was an assistant to the assistant director of the planning division and actively involved with organizing conferences for the department and working with state and federal highway programs.

She was extensively involved in public service having served as the past president of the Retired Public Employees of Nevada in 1998-99; and as director, vice president and president of the Carson City chapter. She also served as a state director and committee chairwoman for the employees organization statewide.

She was three-time president of the Carson Chapter of the American Businesswoman's Association and was the chapter's Woman of the Year in 1974. In 1997, she was honored by the Carson City Area Chamber of Commerce as Woman of the Year and earned two "Service to Mankind" awards from the Sertoma Club.

Her community service included fund-raising for the Ormsby Association for Retired Citizens and organizing Christmas celebrations for a local convalescent home.

She graduated from Sacramento High School and attended Sacramento Junior College. After working for several years in Sacramento, Bybee met Fred Hess. They moved to Flagstaff, Ariz., where they managed a Best Western Motel. In 1963, they relocated to Gold Hill and she began her career with the transportation department.

Her hobbies included dancing, cooking, gardening and crafts.

Among her survivors are her stepson Greg Hess and his wife, Joyce; and stepson Rollie Hess all of Virginia City; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren and many close friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to St. Mary's Hospice, 3624 Goni Road Suite 151, Carson City, NV 89706.
