Woman bails out on charges of dragging dog

A Carson City woman was released on bail Tuesday after spending two nights in jail on suspicion of felony animal cruelty and drunken driving.

According to the police reports, Karen Lynn Daigle Singh "had been dragging her dog with her vehicle."

Singh, 49, was arrested Sunday at 1:14 p.m. at Division and Fifth streets.

Capt. Bob Schriehans of the Carson City Fire Department said they responded to a report of an accident.

When they arrived, Schriehans said, Singh was sitting on the roadside covered in blood.

Paramedics thought she was injured, then discovered the blood was coming from a small terrier dog, which witnesses said had been tied to the bumper of Singh's red Yugo.

Schriehans said the pads of the dog's feet were worn away, as well as its nails.

"Poor little dog," he said.

According to the police report, Singh was uncooperative and cursing at fire department personnel.

Deputies say they recovered a half-empty bottle of champagne on the passenger seat. She was also charged with misdemeanor open container of alcohol in a vehicle.

Chief Deputy Steve Schuette of the Carson City Sheriff's Department said Tuesday the dog, which was taken to Carson Tahoe Veterinary Hospital by the fire department, was recovering.

"The dog doesn't have life threatening injuries. It has a tremendous amount of road rash and lost hair and its going to be in the vet's for an undetermined amount of time because of the bandage changes," Schuette said.

The woman refused a statement to police, so it's unknown if the animal was intentionally tied to the bumper and dragged, or if she'd forgotten the animal was there, Schuette said.

Singh posted a $5,000 bail Tuesday.
