DUI suspect dies at Tahoe hospital

A South Lake Tahoe man arrested on charges of driving under the influence Friday night has died at Barton Memorial Hospital.

Paul Kraft, 39, died at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, police reported.

The incident started with a car accident and confrontation with South Lake Tahoe police on Anita Drive.

Kraft was brought to the hospital Friday night to have blood work performed before police were able to book him into jail.

Earlier that night, Kraft allegedly slammed his vehicle into a snowbank and chased passersby who were trying to help, Sgt. Cameron Carmichael said.

When police officers approached Kraft in his GMC Suburban, he became combative. He was taken into custody at 8:46 p.m.

He later became sick at the hospital and was taken to the emergency room and placed on a ventilator before he died, Barton staff reported.

Results of the blood tests will be available within a week.
