Local students organize clean-ups

The city will dedicate a new "Community Cleanup Trailer" today at 8 a.m. at the Moffat Open Space Property.

The trailer is fully stocked with rakes, hand tools, shovels, picks and storage areas for any community group to borrow and clean something up for a day.

Loren Wooldridge, an Eagle Scout, designed the trailer and he and his friends installed racks, said Vern Krahn, a park planner. Anyone can borrow the trailer, but it has to be used for a community event and to clean public lands.

The trailer is a joint venture between the city's Open Space Advisory Committee, the Foundation for the Betterment of Parks and Recreation, the city's Parks and Recreation Department and Wooldridge. It was funded by a $1,000 donation from the foundation.

Following the dedication ceremony, Jason Strull, a senior at Carson High School, will begin the first cleanup project at Moffat Open Space Property from 9 to 11:30 a.m.

Strull, who is cleaning the property as part of a senior project, said he has seen the Moffat site littered with graffiti and trash since he started climbing nearby.

"I just thought we'd clean up the whole property and make it nice," Strull said. "It'd just be nice it if was a little cleaner --Ebetter vibes and whatnot."

Student Josh Rausch will also hold a cleanup at the southern half of the Lompa Lane Wetlands, located at the corner of Lompa Lane and Northridge Drive, Monday from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Anyone is welcome to join the event. Parking is available in the gravel parking lot located on the north side of Northridge Drive.
