Homeowners in Meyers have agreed to a $5,000 fine and the elimination of the right to build on or cover 900 square feet of their property to settle a building violation.
During a routine inspection, the El Dorado County Building Department found that Susan and Randy Farnsworth's home was built 3 feet, 5 inches taller than the 39 feet, 6 inches permitted.
The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency crafted the settlement agreement, which is expected to be voted on by its Governing Board Wednesday.
Building inspectors determined the extra height was created because the front-to-back length of the house increased from 46 to 50 feet.
The Farnsworths could not be reached for comment. According to a TRPA staff report, they agreed to the settlement in 1999, but "for reasons unknown to the current staff, it was postponed."
The unresolved violation got the attention of staff last month when the Farnsworths contacted El Dorado Building Department about plans to remodel the inside of their home.
