The Nevada Assembly will return to its historic home Monday when for the first time in 34 years a floor session will be held upstairs in the state Capitol.
The last floor session held in the old Assembly chambers was the 55th session of the Nevada Legislature, which adjourned April 24, 1969.
"This will be an extraordinary event," said Speaker Richard Perkins, D-Henderson. "It is an honor and a privilege to hold an Assembly floor session in the building where so many of our most admired predecessors created the policies that made the great state of Nevada the way it is."
He said former governors, speakers and congressional representatives have been invited to join in the event, which is designed to bring part of Nevada's history to life.
The Legislature convened from 1871 through 1969 in the Capitol. A total of 51 regular sessions were held there.
The building now housing the Legislature was opened in time for the 1971 session. Since then, the Senate chambers have been converted into a museum in the Capitol. The Assembly chambers, however, have been kept open as a meeting room.
