4-H pet parade

"Hawg Dogs" with Harley Davidson biker caps were among the winners at the Pets and Projects on Parade competition Saturday at Fuji Park.

The competition was open to all creative youth, their pets and projects, as part of the Capital City 4-H Youth Fair.

The University of Nevada, Reno Cooperative Extension put on the two-day fair featuring events from dog showmanship, dog obedience, a rabbit show, and a cat show.

The "Hawg Dogs" won first place in the projects competition.

Katharine, 13, Craig, 9, and Sterling Fernandez, 10, accepted the first place projects prize for them.

Melissa Nestroyl, 16, won first place over all, with her rabbit Bugs Bunny.

Bugs was the grand champion in his "Pirates of the Caribbean" costume.

Melissa said she decided to make the costume after seeing the movie.

Melissa said she's been in 4-H for three years.

"He was my first rabbit," she said.

Bugs is 3 years old and she's had him since he was a baby.

She says she works with him everyday to get him ready to show.

"I have a pen outside let him run around. I have a rabbit leash, he gets his exercise and gets to do the things he likes to do," she said.

Kelsey Conklin and Kate Dinaver, both 12, who entered together, won together with their rabbit Suzie Q.

Jacki Dunt, 10 and her Shetland pony Betty shared the first place award in the pets on parade category.

They were both dressed in Hawaiian garb.

As kids folded chairs and tables, coordinators got ready for the next event.

"The dog agility contest starts at 2: p.m.," said Marlana Ramirez, youth development assistant for the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension. "So that's coming up next."
