Gunner fire kept under 8 acres

Fire crews Saturday continued mop up on the Gunner fire that burned 71/2 acres near the Carson Rifle Range.

Though fire officials cited shooting as a likely cause on Friday, the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Crews completed a line around the fire, calling it contained, by 11 p.m. The fire that started at 5:15 p.m. was controlled by 11 a.m. Saturday. Controlled means crews have cooled hot spots near the line's edge and that the line is expected to hold under foreseeable conditions.

No injuries were reported.

The fire that burned in sagebrush and cheat grass did not threaten any structures and was fought by crews from the Carson City Fire Department, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and from the air by the Nevada Department of Forestry helicopter. Two singe-engine aircraft and one heavy air tanker also fought the fire.
