City seeks nominations for Carson River Awards

The city is looking for names of people or business who really care about the Carson River.

For the past five years, the Carson River Advisory Committee has taken names and nominations of people, property owners and businesses who have worked to improve habitat, clean up river banks or educate others about the river's importance.

Any special projects property owners or businesses have done in the past year is "something that we would love to acknowledge," said Vern Krahn, park planner for Carson City Parks and Recreation.

The whole purpose behind this is to acknowledge people, individuals, businesses or groups that have assisted Carson City staff or just helped out along the river, Krahn said.

The city offers the awards program as a way to foster awareness "that the river is a resource that we care about," Krahn said. "We're trying to educate people, not only adults but school age children as well, to enhance the river for wildlife, recreation and habitat improvement."

The committee is taking nominations in three categories: stewardship, educational and friend. Stewardship can include acknowledging a private property owner who improved habitat along the river, like stabilizing the bank by plantings or other means. Other nominations could be for private businesses, service clubs, agencies or groups that had employees or members participate in a clean-up day on the river or individuals who have performed resource projects on the river.

Education awards will be given to an agency that does educational workshops supporting stewardship of the river or a school teacher who takes time to educate students about the river.

A "friend" of the river would be an individual or group that might patrol the river corridor, inventory resources or clean up litter, or a riverhood watch program group or individual.

Nomination forms can be found at the Carson City Parks and Recreation Department at 3303 Butti Way, building #9, in Carson City, or by calling Krahn at 887-2363, ext. 1006.

The city asks that all nominations be submitted to the Parks and Recreation Department by noon Aug. 28.

The committee will select the winners at its Sept. 3 meeting. Awards will be given out during Carson River Clean-Up Day Sept. 13.
