Guinn names new Nevada health officer

A 29-year U.S. Air Force veteran has been named Nevada's new state health officer.

The appointment of Dr. Bradford Lee was announced Wednesday by Gov. Kenny Guinn.

The appointment comes about two years after the resignation of Dr. Mary Guinan.

State officials said Lee brings expertise and leadership to the health division.

Lee's "vast experience as a doctor, as well as his background in law and business administration will serve the citizens and visitors of the state of Nevada extremely well," said State Health Division administrator Yvonne Sylva.

Guinn also praised the doctor.

"In this time of need for enhanced public health readiness and close coordination among many agencies, Dr. Lee's military and medical background will ensure Nevada is prepared." the governor said.

Lee served in the United States Air Force for more than 29 years.

As state health officer, Lee is responsible for enforcing all laws and regulations pertaining to public health. This includes interpreting, implementing and providing guidelines for the Health Division, Board of Health, and public and private entities on federal and state laws and Board of Health regulations.

He will also investigate causes of disease, epidemics, causes of deaths and other matters impacting health.

Lee received his medical degree from Howard University, College of Medicine, in 1978.

He received his Juris Doctorate from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law, in 1991 and his Master's of Business Administration from Golden State University in 1994.
