Out & About

With children starting back to school Tuesday, make sure you remember to slow down in the school zones. After-school programs are so very important to many parents and children, and the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada is gearing up for the KIDS Auction and World's Greatest BBQ. This 10th annual fund-raiser brings in more than $100,000 to help with operating budget.

Listen to the Drifters as you look over tables loaded with artwork and merchandise donated to raise funds for the club. To help donate auction items or attend, see below.

Not all schoolchildren qualify for the Carson City School District's Homeless Program to receive a new pair of shoes. The Carson City Jaycees will have the fifth annual No Holds Barred Chili/Salsa Cook-off and Beer Tasting fund-raiser. Money will go to the "Happy Feet" program, which puts new shoes on needy children's feet in the Carson City area. There will be lots of food, arts and crafts, live music, plus more than 15 beers for tasting (and purchasing). The Jaycees are looking for chili/salsa competitors and craft vendors.

Members of Soroptimist International of Carson City and the

Carson Advocates for Cancer Care are planning the second annual Strokes for Hopes Golf Tournament, which sold out last year. It raised $17,000 after expenses, and organizers are hoping to receive even more to help provide mammograms for an estimated 1,500 women between the ages of 40 and 49 who are underinsured or

not insured. More information on this event is coming.

National Best Sellers Real Estate' "Boot Scootin' BBQ" is Sept. 20 at the Governor's Mansion from 5 to 9 p.m. David John and the Comstock Cowboys will play, and Molly's Gourmet Catering provides the grub. Reserved tickets are $400 for a table of eight, and Cowpoke tickets are $35 each. Raffle tickets are five for $20.
