The Silver and Snowflakes Holiday Tree Lighting is tonight from 5:30 to 6:30, starting on the Capitol grounds. After the Capitol trees are lit by Gov. Kenny Guinn, the festivities will move to Nevada and Musser streets, where Mayor Ray Masayko will light the city tree.
"It's just a great night - downtown sparkles, and all the shops have refreshments," said Maxine Nietz, event coordinator. "It's just so good for downtown."
During the festivities at the Capitol grounds, 300 students from the Carson City Fifth-Grade Music Students Singing Ensemble and the Red Hot Bell Peppers handbell choir from Carson Middle School will perform.
"That's a really, really wonderful thing to see and hear," Nietz said.
Santa Claus will arrive to distribute candy canes in a Ford Model T car driven by a smiling dog named Beauregard. Members of Carson Advocates for Cancer Care will serve hot cocoa.
The governor and Mrs. Guinn are scheduled to flip the switch on the two Capitol trees about 5:45 p.m. They will also light up 16 reindeer made of willow by schoolchildren and Cub Scouts during the last week.
After the crowd wanders to Musser and Nevada streets, the mayor will light the city tree. The Home School Singers and the Chorus of the Comstock will sing carols there.
After all three trees are lit, there will be an open house at City Hall where the Fraternal Order of Eagles will provide refreshments. There, the winners of the Kit Carson Trail Holiday Art contest will be announced. Masayko will hand out gift certificates to the winning student artists.
Many of the businesses in Telegraph Square will be open late and offer refreshments. Live reindeer will be available for photos in the square.
