CORONA, Calif. -- A tractor-trailer rig carrying 44,000 pounds of powdered boric acid was reported stolen from a commercial neighborhood in Riverside County, where it was parked on its way to the Long Beach Shipyard, authorities said.
Corona Police Sgt. Jon Stofila said the truck's disappearance, which was reported Friday, did not appear to be an act of terrorism. Because of the amount of chemical missing, however, the department notified the FBI's anti-terorrist unit in Riverside County.
Stofila said the green, 1996 Freightliner truck with California license plate 9B89830 was likely stolen between 9:30 p.m. Thursday and 6 a.m. Friday. He said it was parked in Corona at the intersection of Bonnie Circle and Pomona Road, off of Route 91, the major highway connecting Riverside and Orange counties.
The flatbed trailer carrying the acid had Oregon plates HQ57530.
Boric acid is often used as a mild antiseptic, eyewash and coolant.
