Obituary: Lloyd "Bud" Cullen

Lloyd "Bud" Cullen, 77, a Carson City resident for the past 15 years, died Feb. 11, 2003, in a Carson City nursing facility after an extended illness. He was born July 31, 1925, in Sioux Falls, S.D., to Arthur and Blanche Cullen.

He attended Washington Senior High School in Sioux Falls and Pasadena City College in Pasadena, Calif.

He joined the U.S. Army in 1943, and volunteered for training as an infantry paratrooper. He was attached to Company A, 513th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 17th Airborne Division.

In 1945, he fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his action in Belgium and was discharged in February 1946.

He returned to Sioux Falls and studied journalism at the University of South Dakota.

He married Betty Evenson on Feb. 12, 1949. That year, he re-entered the U.S. Army and was commissioned as an infantry officer while stationed in Germany. He was discharged in 1953.

Mr. Cullen worked with his father in his plumbing business then began working for the South Dakota Employment Service in 1964. In 1967, he moved to Mandan, N.D., where he organized and was the officer-in-charge of the area's food stamp program, retiring from the Department of Agriculture in 1984.

He was a member of the Elks Club, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Among his survivors are his wife of Carson City; son and daughter-in-law, Lance and Chris Cullen and grandchildren Kelley and Jeffrey, all of Reno; and brother, John of Sioux Falls.

At his request, no service will be held.
