What's closed for President's Day Monday?

Many businesses will be closed Monday to mark President's Day, a national holiday which honors two legendary American Presidents -- George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

President's Day is the third Monday in February every year and was proclaimed in 1971 by President Nixon.

All schools in the Carson City School District will be closed for the day, but Nevada's representatives in the Legislature will be working as normal while students sleep in.

Limited to 120 calendar days, Legislators don't have the luxury of days off. They'll be getting under way around 9 a.m. after flights arrive with Southern Nevada legislators returning north after the weekend.

While most senior centers in the region will be closed, including Douglas County, Dayton, Storey County, Silver Springs and Fernley, the Carson City Senior Center will be open for business.

"We're going to be like a big party here," laughed the center's director Janice McIntosh. "We're open because we have to serve 260 meal days a year under our grant. It's part of our contract with the state."

Also, the center is doing some remodeling, which could eat into meal days down the line. The current project, paid for by a Community Development Block Grant from the State Economic Development Office, is to tear up and replace kitchen flooring.

"(President's Day) is not one of our regular days off any way," she said.

All municipal offices are closed for President's Day. Carson City and Douglas County libraries will be closed Monday for the holiday.

The Children's Museum of Northern Nevada, 813 N. Carson St., will be open Monday to celebrate the holiday.

For years, both Feb. 12 and Feb. 22 were observed as federal holidays to honor the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and George Washington, respectively, until 1971.

That year, Nixon proclaimed a single federal holiday, Presidents' Day, to be observed on the third Monday of February, honoring all past U.S. presidents.
