120 YEARS AGO

The killing of the Bonanza Bullion tax bill yesterday was an astonisher for the bullionists and indeed a good many other people, as the general impression was that it would slide through without opposition.

100 YEARS AGO

Nick Sorgie drove a band of 20 head of cattle from his ranch on the Truckee Meadows over the Geiger Grade wagon road to this city Sunday (Virginia City) which opened the thoroughfare to travel. Mr. Sorgie reports hundreds of dead quail that perished during the cold wave last week are strewn about the haystacks. Quail on toast is now the usual breakfast fare with Truckee Meadow farmers -- Chronicle.

70 YEARS AGO

Two bills memorializing the Congress on Indian affairs were introduced in the assembly this morning from military and Indian affairs. One requested congress to abolish the Indian Bureau. The other asked R.F.C. to make immediate provision for relief of destitute Nevada Indians.

50 YEARS AGO

City's new sweeper made its appearance on Carson streets with Jack Butti of the street department and Bob Ward of Sanford Tractor, who gave it a two-mile run. Mayor Wilbur Stodieck said it would not be driven to the city dump.

20 YEARS AGO

Three new advertising salesmen have joined the Nevada Appeal. They are Ken Winter, Lynne Griggs and Tony Zehring. Zehring's father was chief of public relations for the U.S. Air Force.

10 YEARS AGO

Memorial service for Ray G. Shaw, 71. He founded his own construction company Shaw Construction Co. in San Jose and moved to Lake Tahoe and then Carson City in 1965. He built the Ormsby House parking garage, Wal-mart and numerous buildings and served in the U.S. Navy as a gunner's mate on the USS Cleveland. He was involved in a major number of community projects here and is survived by his wife Kathryn and sons Steven, Edward, Robert and daughters Sandy Hatchell and Holly Rae Black, Carson City and stepdaughter Gina Lopez and stepson Vince Lopez of Las Vegas.
