Board to discuss idea of vocational school

City, school and college officials are looking for ways to tailor education to meet the economic needs of Carson City.

A brainstorming session among members of the city's Economic Vitality Committee produced the idea of creating a vocational school that would cater to building trades such as woodworking.

"I think there's a real strong appetite in our community to support things that support growth," said Carson High School Principal Glen Adair. "We want to be a part of that in any way we can. We want to be a positive player in that whole picture."

Adair will present the idea to the school board tonight.

Although he said he supports the concept, the plans are still too vague to make any real decisions.

"We're looking at a whole lot of people being involved," Adair said. "A lot of things need to fall into place."

The proposed school could fall under the jurisdiction of Carson High or be run through Western Nevada Community College. An outside entity also could take control of the school.

Regardless, Adair said the project would have his blessing.

"I want to work with the school board and our community to ensure our kids have the best future possible," he said. "That certainly means jobs. And not all kids are going to go to college."

The trade school would prepare students to enter the work force immediately after graduating, or graduates could continue their studies at the college.

"It's a good approach for future employees and employers to build the economic vitality of the community," Adair said. "We're happy to be at the table, and I think it's a fabulous idea."

Board members will discuss the proposition, but not make a decision tonight.
