JobConnect provides vital link for businesses, employees

Nevada JobConnect is a statewide employment network that is developing the state's work force.

Cathy Paschane, human resources director at Mr. Gasket in Carson City, said it's working.

Mr. Gasket employs about 130 workers to manufacture parts for high-performance vehicles. Hiring large numbers of employees can mean weeding through more than 100 applications. Paschane said she simply doesn't have the manpower.

"JobConnect is a critical partner," Paschane said. "A while back, we needed to increase our work force in a hurry."

JobConnect helped the company fill out the paperwork, did some screening, and brought the applications to Paschane. "I selected the ones I would interview," she said.

Mr. Gasket receives many applicants for most of its jobs. Applicants compete for the temporary positions, which make up one-third of the company's work force.

JobConnect incorporates services offered by a number of public and private entities, putting them in one location for the convenience of business and for people seeking employment or training assistance.

The 62-member organization offers recruiting, retention, training, retraining and outplacement services.

Created by the Workforce Investment Act of 1998, Nevada JobConnect incorporates services offered by a consortium of public and private entities.

The organization is funded by federal and state tax dollars.

"JobConnect is part of a national act that requires all states to put their labor work force services under one umbrella. But Nevada is ahead of the curve," spokeswoman Tierra Griffiths said.

Statistics show the program's Rapid Response Team, which addresses large layoffs such as those at Kmart, increases the likelihood of applicants returning to work as soon as possible.

A random sample of Rapid Response attendees shows they draw unemployment benefits for an average of 9.4 weeks, three weeks shorter than for those not attending the program.

JobConnect has 11 offices across the state.
