The Educator's Closet, a recycling center where teachers can get free lesson supplies, received a donation of $40,000 worth of Dry Erase-type boards from Shankle Properties in Minden, according to coordinator Kristi Pulizzotto.
Shankle Properties discovered as many as 1,700 whiteboards after a client left one of their properties, she said.
"They were just going to throw them away," Pulizzotto said. Instead, they offered the boards to the Educator's Closet teacher's resource center, from where they could be used in Carson City School District classrooms.
The boards are being delivered to every school in the district.
"It made all the teachers very happy," Pulizzotto said.
Shankle Properties could not be reached for comment.
The Educators Closet, now in its fourth year, operates on a grant from the Nevada Environmental Protection Agency, which is working to reduce the amount of waste in landfills.
"We had almost 300 teachers come through here this year," Pulizzotto said. "All they have to is mark down what treasures they take out. They come out of here with boxes of stuff."
Pulizzotto said they also received a $2,500 donations from an anonymous retired Carson School District teacher.
The Educator's Closet, a yellow building with a blue roof, is at 1402 W. King St. It is open from 1:30 p.m. until 5 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday. The phone number is 283-2048.
