Motorcycle club meets to plan year

About 15 motorcycle enthusiasts gathered at the Round Table Pizza in South Carson Sunday night for a meeting of the Silver Knights Motorcycle Club.

Club members, people interested in joining and a representative from another club showed up to discuss future rides over dinner and sodas.

The Silver Knights Club, open to police and correctional officers, firefighters, emergency medical technicians and members of the military (and all those retired from those professions) was formed about 1 1/2 years ago.

"We just want to see more members come out and ride with us," said Robby Robinson, club president. The correctional officer was sporting a gray, long-sleeved T-shirt with a blue Silver Knights logo on the back and orange flames climbing up the arms.

He described one of the group's biggest events, the annual Elko Jamboree, which is the weekend of June 21 and 22 of this year.

"We rent out about 10 rooms at the Stampede Hotel down there," he said.

Member Ray Finchum of Carson City, also a correctional officer, described how the manager of the hotel said she looks forward to his and Robinson's "comedy act" this year.

"They're blocking off almost the entire parking lot just for our bikes alone," he said. He said last year the Stampede provided them with a barbecue made from a 55-gallon drum. "We were doing it right there in the front yard of the hotel," he said with a laugh.

Lorenzo Contreras of Carson City was there to see about joining. He owns a 2000 Harley-Davidson Heritage soft tail.

"You don't actually have to own a Harley-Davidson to be in the club," said Robinson. "If you have a Honda or a Kawasaki, that's OK."

John Bergstrom, a Carson City firefighter, was visiting from his club, the Sierra Chapter of the Wind & Fire Motorcycle Club.

He explained that he came to check it out because a couple of guys in his club have been asking about the Silver Knights.

Silver Knights members Mike and Lin Woodman, both retired correctional officers, are working on 2003 calendar which will list club events and special rides.

The club meets on the second Sunday of every month at the South Carson Round Table before its big ride of the year to Elko. Members depart from Slot World after coffee at 6:30 a.m. June 20.
