Board to consider local construction company to manage bond project

Pending approval from school board members tonight, Miles Brothers Construction, Inc. will spearhead the completion of a bond project as the construction manager.

"They've done the same thing on projects of similar size and scope," said Mike Mitchell, director of operations for the Carson City School District. "They have a good knowledge of local contractors and subcontractors. We just felt real confident with them."

Mitchell and a bond oversight committee made up of community members selected Miles Brothers. School board members will review the selection at tonight's meeting at 7.

Owner Bill Miles said he is eager to begin working with the school district.

"We've been in the Carson City area for 17 years," he said. "We're very interested in how taxes are spent in Carson City. We'll make sure taxpayers get they best value they can for their money."

Miles, a 1972 Carson High School graduate, owns the company with his twin brothers John and George Miles, 1973 CHS graduates.

The construction company, based in Mound House, would oversee every phase of constructing the addition to Bordewich-Bray Elementary School.

The first task will be to coordinate the design team with an architect, mechanical and electrical engineers, and get input from the school's administration and staff.

"It will be the construction manager's charge to organize these entities," Mitchell said. "They should coordinate those efforts and make them run smoothly."

He expects the designs to be drawn up by mid-April, with the bidding process beginning in May. Work should begin on the addition when students are dismissed for summer break in June.

The addition will replace five modular buildings that were torn down because of toxic mold. Voters approved a $3.75-million bond in November to pay for construction.

-- The board members will also finalize the policy on who can participate in graduation ceremonies. The draft excludes students who have not passed the state-mandated proficiency exam from walking at graduation.
