Fund Raiser for CTH Cancer Center slated for Thursday

The public is invited to a Thursday evening fund-raiser for Carson-Tahoe Hospital's proposed Cancer Center.

The fund-raiser will be at the Nevada State Library and Archives, 100 N. Stewart St., where a social hour is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. A brief presentation is slated for 7:15 p.m., hospital officials said.

"We'll be talking about the Cancer Center and what it will do for the community," said Pam Graber, executive director of the Carson-Tahoe Hospital Foundation. "We're also going to recognize major donors (and) announce the money raised to date and our goal."

The 38,000 square-foot, single-story center is expected to cost $12 million. Ground breaking is set for June, Graber said.

"Cancer survivors tell us the worst things about this disease are the fatigue and how horrible they feel," she said. "They get worn out, going from one place to another for treatment."

"All the necessary cancer services exist in Carson City and this facility will bring those services and programs under one roof."

Graber said state-of-the-art radiation equipment will be on site, together with a many of services and resources beyond what the hospital offers now.

Final plans for construction are being ironed out for the center. It will be on the campus of the new Regional Medical Center in northwest Carson City, Graber said.

The building will be funded primarily through grants and private donations.

Cancer is the leading cause of death among those 35 to 65 and at some point, it touches almost everyone, said Ed Epperson, chief executive officer for Carson-Tahoe Hospital.

"The Cancer Center will be the pre-eminent treatment center for the disease in this region," he said. "We plan to offer cancer services that will exceed any that are currently available in Nevada."
