Husband arrested after hitting wife with car

A Monday night collision between a man in a car and his wife who was walking in Minden is being investigated as a traffic accident, but sheriff's deputies there may be more to it than that.

The status of the investigation could change if it is determined to be anything more than a traffic accident, said Douglas County sheriff's Lt. Mike Biaggini.

The accident took place about 8 p.m. on Highway 395 outside the Greater Nevada Credit Union in Minden.

Luis Hernandez-Barreda, 30, was arrested by a Nevada Highway Patrol trooper about 9 p.m. on suspicion of driving under the influence and causing substantial bodily harm. He is being held on $15,000 bail.

Hernandez-Barreda's wife, Christy Callahan, 34, was apparently hit by him, officers said. Sheriff's Lt. Lance Modispacher said she is in stable condition at Washoe Medical Center in Reno, but that information could not be verified.

Biaggini said the Highway Patrol is investigating the scene to determine the nature of the incident. If it is found that Hernandez-Barreda purposely hit his wife, the sheriff and Highway Patrol would share in the investigation.

"That's really the focus of our investigation at this point," Biaggini said. "Right now, it's being handled as an accident."
