The Nevada Appeal will host a free seminar on how to work with Carson City-area media organizations Saturday in Marlette Hall at Western Nevada Community College.
"Every single nonprofit group, business and service organization should send some representatives to this seminar," said Nevada Appeal City Editor Ray Estrada.
The morning meeting is aimed at improving the public's understanding of how to get information into newspapers and other news media, including radio and television. Part of that will be clarifying the difference between news, information and advertising.
"There is a lot of misunderstanding in many communities about how to work with newspapers and other media," said Estrada. "Times change, people change, and this needs to be updated every year or so."
Ann Hansen, marketing director at Western Nevada Community College, will speak about how to put together an effective press release. Estrada describes the press release as "the building block of communication with the news media."
Hansen's presentation will be followed by a panel discussion by reporters, editors, producers and representatives from the fields of advertising and circulation. ?ttendees may ask questions of panel members.
Also speaking in the seminar will be Craig Swope, who works with Carson Access Television. He will serve on the media panel and arrange to have the seminar videotaped so that it can be run again on Public Access Television.
