Brewery Arts Center holds summer activities for kids

Imagination in Action, a program that allows children to develop their skills in the fine arts, is holding two summer sessions.

The program, created through Carson City's Brewery Arts Center, lets children ages 6-13 explore the arts through painting, pottery, acting and singing.

"The best part of the program is seeing kids make friends and tackle tasks they have never tried before and achieving them, "said Darla Bayer, coordinator and teacher for Imagination in Action. "It's great to see the kids grow."

The first session is June 16-27 and the second is Aug. 11-22. Both run Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sessions typically hold 36 students, Bayer said.

Session one is called "Things to do on the road" and teaches children car games and how to construct map holders and special pillows for long rides.

The second session, entitled "Movie Madness," gives children the opportunity to write a script, design costumes and act in their own movie. Bayer said she hopes to broadcast the film on public television when the students have completed the production.

"We did the movie session a couple years ago and the kids had a blast," Bayer said. " Their movies were on a bad snowman that was shaped like a square and one on the case of a bunch of missing things. "

Bayer said Imagination in Action also has holiday and spring sessions. Some of the past sessions have included making scrap books and designing a new holiday.

The classes are taught by local artists from Carson City and Douglas County.

"There are a lot of different teaching styles," Bayer said. "We try to teach them things that they can do at other times without us."

Call the Brewery Arts Center at 883-1976 to enroll. Bayer said she prefers that children sign up before the first session but said she will accept them on the first day of classes. Cost is $140 for members of the Brewery Arts Center and $145 for non-members. Siblings of members will also receive a discount.
