Obituary: David G. Towell Sr.

A memorial service for David G. Towell Sr., 66, will be at noon Saturday at Coventry Cross Episcopal Church in Minden.

Another service will be June 28 at Christ Church in Bronxville, N.Y.

Mr. Towell died June 10, 2003, at Washoe Medical Center after a two-year battle with cancer. He was born June 9, 1937, in New York City.

In 1960, he graduated from the College of Pacific, where he played football, ran long distance, and wrote for the college newspaper.

Mr. Towell served in the Nevada Air National Guard from 1960 to 1966. In 1965, he moved to the Carson Valley, where he worked in real estate for nearly 40 years. He was Nevada's only representative in the U.S. Congress during the 1973-74 session and lost a bid for U.S. Senate in 1976.

He wrote hundreds of poems and two published books "Conversations with the Captain in Washington, D.C." in 2001 and "From Jenny to Jets" in 2002. He enjoyed running and ran several marathons. He also loved music, and learned to play piano and wrote several songs later in life.

Among his survivors are his brother, S. Gilmer of Short Hills, N.J.; sister, Cynthia Shiveley of Bronxville; and sons David Jr. and Mark and two grandchildren, all of Reno.
