Obituary: James Hamilton Powell

A service for James Hamilton Powell will be at at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Baca Funeral Home in Deming, N.M.,

Mr. Powell died June 11, 2003, in Fletcher Allen Hospital, Burlington, Vt. He was born Dec. 4, 1918, in Brooklyn, Ill., to Phillip Lincoln and Goldie B. Johnston Powell.

He was a World War II veteran, and served five years in the U.S. Army as an Ordinance Staff Sargent, helping to liberate France. Upon his return, he attended college earning a master's degree in education.

Upon completion of his degree, Mr. Powell went to work for the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs as a teacher, and was steadily promoted to several positions of authority in Arizona, Nevada, and Utah, ending his career as an Education Program Administrator. He received a Presidential Commendation for his work at Stewart Indian School. He enjoyed trout fishing, especially in the White Mountains of Arizona.

Among his survivors are his wife of 60 years, Cecile; daughters C. Diane Carter, Goldianne C. Ethelbah, and Pamela L. Powell; son James H. Powell II; grandchildren, Hamilton B. Carter, Michael Powell, Harlan Powell, Jamie Powell, Michelle Ray and Kasye Mouser and great-grandchildren Amber Mouser, Keely Ray, and David Ray.
