Brush fire

Highway 50 west of Carson City reopened with a lane going in each direction at 6 p.m. after being closed for two hours by a fast-moving wildfire.

The blaze, which consumed an estimated 500 acres, was being knocked down by firefighters as of 6:33 p.m. Tuesday.

The black plume of smoke, which loomed over Carson after the fire's start at about 2:30 p.m. had been reduced to a few white puffs after four hours of concerted efforts by firefighters from city, state and Douglas County.

According to the Nevada Highway Patrol, fire on both sides of the highway prompted them to close it at 3:40 p.m.
